Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge: Know all about India's longest bridge on river


Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday laid the foundation stone of India's longest bridge. This bridge will connect Dhubri in Assam with Phulbari in Meghalaya. This 19.3 km long bridge will be the longest bridge in the country and will prove to be very important in connecting these two northeastern states. PM Modi said that the distance between Assam and Meghalaya by road is about 250 km. In future it will be only 19-20 kms. PM Modi also launched the Mahabahu-Brahmaputra Project. Apart from this, he also participated in the Bhoomi Pujan of the two-lane Majuli bridge through video conferencing. This bridge will connect Majuli in Assam with Jorhat. Dhubri-Phulbari bridge Is The longest in the bridge In Our Country


This four-lane bridge will be built on the Brahmaputra river. It will connect Dhubri (North Bank) and Phulbari (South Bank). This bridge will come under NH-127B. This bridge will connect Dhubri in Assam with Phulbari, Tura, Rongram and Rongjeng in Meghalaya. The estimated cost of the bridge is Rs 4,997 crore.

The need for this bridge was felt in April 2012 when a boat carrying 305 people capsized in the Brahmaputra river. At present vehicles have to travel more than 200 kms. It takes about six hours. At present, the boats that ply between Dhubri and Phulbari take about two and a half hours to cross the river.

Once this bridge starts between Dhubri and Phulbari, it will take only 15 to 20 minutes to cross the river. (signal picture)

Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge Key Highlights:

1- Larsen and Toubro (L&T) has bagged the contract to construct India's longest river bridge.

2- L&T has won Rs. 3,166 crore Brahmaputra bridge project. 

3- The bridge is the longest bridge over a river in India, spanning over more than 19 km.

4- It will feature a navigation bridge of 12.625 km approach viaducts of 3.5 km on the Dubri side and 2.2 km on the Phulbari side, connected with approach roads and interchanges on both sides.  

5- It is located near the Bangladesh border and will connect Dhubri in Assam with Phulbari in Meghalaya-- a missing link of NH 127-B. 

6- The bridge is being funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and it would be executed by the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation(NHIDCL).  

7- It is expected to be completed by the year 2026-27. 

Significance of the Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge

 
“Not only will it be an important passage for offering easier access to our North Eastern international borders but will give a huge fillip to trade and commerce in the region for the accelerated development of all the North Eastern States especially Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and the Barak Valley,” as per the Whole Time Director & Senior Executive Vice President (Civil Infrastructure), L&T, S. V. Desai.
